THE ASSISTANCE OF LAITY IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE HOLY COMMUNION
DURING PUBLIC WORSHIP
The Bishop of Huron authorizes his incumbents to select and train certain of their laity to assist in the administration of the Holy Communion, under the following conditions:
The lay people, chosen by the rector, are to be mature, (baptized communicants), approved for the task by the Parish Council, and be held in high regard by the congregation. It is most important that they may be given careful and detailed training.
It is recommended that Lay Administrators:
1. Normally come out of the congregation for this duty;
2. Do not wear robes, unless customarily vested as chorister, etc.;
3. After they have received Communion, proceed to assist in the distribution of the Elements;
4. May administer either paten or chalice;
5. Take their regular places after the administration is completed.
As much as possible, new people should be selected each year because it is important that this ministry is an "open" one not dominated by any one group or individual.
However, when it is difficult to find new people to undertake the ministry, those previously chosen may continue to serve, the decision having been made by the rector and the Parish Council.
