MEMORIAL AND STAINED GLASS WINDOW COMMITTEE

The Committee

All stained glass windows, before they are installed in churches of the Diocese of Huron, must have the approval of the Stained Glass Window Committee, authorized by the Diocesan Council.  The Diocesan Bishop appoints this Committee, whose function is to appraise each proposed design in terms of its theological and biblical authenticity, and its professional and artistic merit.  When the Committee is satisfied on these points it will, with the concurrence of the Bishop, recommend the installation of the window.

The Procedure

The first step towards installing a new window or series of windows is for the donor, the incumbent and parish representatives to agree on the theme or themes to be represented.  A long-term over-all plan for the subject-matter is recommended, to ensure continuity and consistency.

The project should then be entrusted to a professional designer of stained glass.  A number of the leading manufacturers of stained glass are advertised in the Anglican Journal and the Huron Church News, but independent professional designers may be considered as well.  The artist submits the design to the incumbent for approval by the donor, the incumbent and the parish representatives.

Note: Estimates for all external windows should provide for protective double-glazing and adequate ventilation, and suitable insurance should be arranged.

The proposed design is then submitted to the Stained Glass Window Committee, with the following information:

the reason for the choice of theme,
the size and location of the window,
whether or not the window is one of a series and, if so, how it will relate to the other windows in theme and style,
the name of the artist or company involved in the design,
the approval of the parish,
the proposed date of installation.

The Stained Glass Window Committee then appraises the design, and either approves it with or without recommendations, or sends it back for adjustment or replacement with a new design.  This replacement design shall then be submitted.

General Note

The Stained Glass Window Committee may be consulted at any stage in the above procedure, and will be glad to assist in any way which may expedite the project, and result in a work of lasting value.  The Committee meets when and as required, but adequate lead time should be given between the submission of the design and its execution.  All enquiries and submissions should be directed to:
