The Executive Council of General Synod in 1964 approved a resolution reading: "That the Good Friday Collect containing the portion respecting the Jewish people be referred to the Committee on the Revision of the Book of Common Prayer for consideration and report in due course".
This subject received the study of the Committee named in the Resolution. The Canadian House of Bishops, at its 1965 meeting, received a report from the Committee on the Revision of the Book of Common Prayer and, in accepting a recommendation contained therein, requested the Committee to consider eliminating the Third Collect for Good Friday at the next revision and the Bishops authorize their clergy to omit that particular prayer on future Good Fridays. This action was reaffirmed by the House of Bishops in February, 1977.
The action of the House of Bishops is in recognition of the difficulties created in relationships with the Jewish people by reason of certain phrases in this collect. In giving effect to the decision of the Canadian House of Bishops, and pending the recommendation of the Committee on the Revision of the Book of Common Prayer, for the next revision of the Prayer Book, clergy of this Diocese are authorized to omit the Third Collect appointed for Good Friday. (See page 174, Book of Common Prayer.)
The following prayer is recommended as an alternative to the third collect in the Book of Common Prayer, for use on Good Friday and on other occasions:
"O God, who didst choose Israel to be thine inheritance, look upon and bless thine ancient people, the Jews.
Take away all pride and prejudice in us that may hinder their understanding of the Gospel, and hasten the time when peace may rule in Jerusalem. Through the merits of our Saviour, Jesus Christ."
