The Mentor is a senior priest assigned to the newly ordained Cleric for a period of 2 years. Together the Mentor and newly ordained Cleric work through a detailed list of processes as well as any issues that may arise during the mentoring period.
Valuing Famlies of Clergy
For the families of clergy it is crucial that there be support in dealing with the circumstances that are unique to clergy families. To this end, events are planned for spouse of clergy. As well, two chaplains have been assigned to provide support for families of clergy; Rev. Bev Diet ; Rev. Norman Casey ; and Rev. Patricia Dobbs-Luxton. As well at the annual Fall event for Seminary Students, a new component has been introduced that enables the significant partners of the seminary students to come together to develop a community that can support a them through their spouse's seminary training and on into postordination.
Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a diocesan-led program for clergy in new cures and their congregations, which to seeks to strengthen the relationships amoung Anglican clergy, congregations and dicoeses during critical periods of transition in clergy leadership of the congregation. This initiative is designed to build the context in which ministry is accomplished in the congregations of a diocese by:
* Assisting with the transitions issues inherent in any new ministry
*Sharpening the skills for congregational development
*Strengthening the collegial relationships amoung the clergy of a diocese; and deepening the trust and interconnectedness between the clergy, congregations and Bishop/Bishop's staff.
The payoff for clergy in new cures is dramatic and multi-layered. There is the opportunity to reflect with colleagues on the complex and mystifying dynamics being encountered in the new congregation. There is the opportunity for regular, ongoing continuing education on the dynamics of transition and the elements of congregational development. While there is some teaching/facilitating on a particular focus in each module, much of the resources and ideas come from the clergy attending the session. Fresh Start is designed to be an intentional, reflective and collegial program and its benefits for the individual cleric, for the diocese and the congregations involved can be great. The time spent in Fresh Start can be documented by the cleric for time in Continuing Education.
Spiritual direction
All clergy are encouraged to find a spiritual director and continue in their own spiritual development.
EAP (Employee Assistance Problem)
For clergy and families requiring counseling services that are not covered by their Health Benefit Coverage, financial assistance may be available by contacting the Coordinator of Human Resources, Melanie Snyders.
Continuing Education
The cleric is responsible to maintain life long learning. In order to facilitate this, $600 per year is available for the individual priest to access for continuing education, journals, books and spiritual retreats. In accordance with Diocesan Policy, a cleric may take up to two weeks per year for educational leave. The timing of this leave should be negotiated with the Parish Wardens. Time spent in continuing education can be submitted for maintenance on your personnel file.
Sabbatical Leave
As well, clergy who have been ordained 5 or more years, may apply for a sabbatical leave of not less than 8 weeks, once they have completed 3 years in a particular parish. A sabbatical leave must be negotiated with the Bishop and Wardens. Up to $3000 to pay a replacement clergy may be available from General Synod. Please contact the Director. Human resources or your Guidelines Manual for further details. For assistance or resources on writing a Sabbatical Proposal, please contact the Director of Human Resources.
