To the Clergy of the Diocese of Huron
From: Bishop Bruce Howe and Bishop Bob Bennett
Dear Friends:
We are writing in the aftermath of General Synod to address two changes to the
Marriage Canon (Canon XXI).
1. Section 12 (c) in Part II of Canon XXI was changed and now reads:
c) the Body of the Church is the appropriate place for the solemnization of a
marriage but a marriage may be solemnized in another location if the
incumbent, after consultation with the bishop, is satisfied that the
solemnity and public nature of the occasion will be preserved and that the
service will be conducted with dignity in godly and decent order. NOTE:
At first glance this mayor may not look different but the new wording
relaxes considerably the place of marriage.
2. Section 27, in Part IV of Canon XXI regarding "Application for Permission to
Remarry" was substantiallyc hanged.
i) Section 27 (c) reads:
"The Application shall be made to and determined by the Incumbent of
the parish or mission where it is desired that the intended marriage be
celebrated."
ii) Section 27 (e) reads:
"The Application shall be made in writing and signed by the applicants
and shall contain the information required by Schedule C .
NOTE: This means that the Diocese of Huron will no longer have a Matrimonial
Commission. It does mean that Incumbents will make the decision about
whether to officiate at a marriage where one or both parties have been
previously married. Please note that the new Canon does require some
assurances be made by the couple in writing to the Incumbent. These
assurances are described in the new Canona nd are found in our current
Application Form. It hasb eens uggestedth at our form could use some
revision but the current one is what is presently available
